“Shit.”

I jump up and barrel towards Preacher, who’s holding a very bloody Bane on his shoulder. I grab his other arm and sling it over my neck, and together Preacher and I haul him to the kitchen.

Dishes crash to the floor as Axe makes room for us to lay him on the dinner table. “The fuck happened?”

“I was fuckin’ shot. Obviously,” Bane says with a huff of a laugh. His hands are covered in blood and pressed to his side, and as he laughs, more blood pours out and spills onto the table, staining the wood.

Axe curses. “By who?”

Preacher pulls off his jacket and tosses it onto a nearby chair. “Some fuck on a sports bike. Couldn’t see his face under his helmet. Ripped right into the Tommy V’s parking lot and emptied his fuckin’ clip on us.”

Axe roughs his hand through his hair and throws me a knowing glance. Someone’s fucking with us. Making a move on our territory. Don’t know who the fuck would have the balls to pull that shit, but none of this is a coincidence.

First our shipment disappears, then last night, one of our suppliers gets pinched at the border. The guy we got working down there barely had enough time to warn our crew before the whole fuckin’ thing got seized. Some anonymous tip to the RCMP telling them something big was coming.

And now one of my guys gets shot. Hasn’t been a hit out in South Bay since my old man was taken out.

Trouble’s coming. I can feel it.

Bane glances over my shoulder. “Oh, don’t look so grim, honey. It’s a flesh wound.”

Behind me, Kat is wide-eyed. One of her hands is curled tightly around her sister’s arm, and the other is plastered across her mouth. Triss is frozen in place with her back to the wall, her eyes a stormy mess of fear and unease and panic. It’s the same damn look she gave me last night when I showed up how I did. When I was messy and bloody and out of control.

I don’t like being the thing that makes her feel scared. I sure as fuck don’t like that for the second night in a row, she’s getting wrapped up in my shit. And right now, she’s probably thinking the same damn thing I am—she should run. She should grab her sister and drag her back home to where there’s no blood or broken dishes on the floor, to where she’d be safe. They both would be.

Of all fuckin’ days for Bane to pick to get shot at.

“Ah, fuck, dude. Don’t touch it!” Bane snaps.

“Just relax, man,” Tex says, smacking away Bane’s grip on his shirt. “I’m just checking for an exit. Yeah, see? Went right through. That’s good. You probably won’t die if you quit bleeding all over the place.”

“I’ll try not to make a mess—ah, god dammit, Tex!” Bane yells out, thrusting at Tex’s shoulder.

Triss blinks, her face shifting from panic to calm, as if Bane’s pained shout pulled her from whatever shit was going on in her head.
